What's Your Why?
I am a big reader. I love all types of books-getting lost in a story and escaping for a bit is something I find truly exciting. I also love books that challenge my mind and help me think differently, guide me to be a better coach and human and provide the random ‘ah ha’ moment.
If you were to look in my office, its filled with many of these types of books. Some of my favorites are listed in the Resources page on my website. One thing I know about myself is, while I will sit for hours getting lost in a fiction book, I won't with non-fiction leadership books.
I typically read sections, get inspired and then move onto the next one. I will however, listen to the audio book from beginning to end. This is how I find a lot of books to purchase. I start with the audio book then buy the actual book for reference at a particular part.
Recently, I decided to re-listen to one of my favorite books Start with Why by Simon Sinek. I have read the book multiple times, but at very different stages in my career. Its funny when you change the lens of how you look at things, you can find new nuggets of information that inspire and excite you. This time as I was listening (and simultaneously, scanning the pages of the hard copy on my desk), I wanted to see if I could uncover if I was using my why in my business. And if I wasn’t, how could I find it.
Unconsciously, I have been living my why with my business since its inception. I truly believe that professional development should be something easily implemented into our lives. Simple questions can uncover so much about ourselves and provide great insight into how and why we do things.
Understanding oneself is powerful and can make impacts both professionally and personally. It allows for the growth we seek and is unique to each of us. I have built my business around that belief. Whether its coaching individuals or facilitating workshops, the why never changes.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is this one:
“And it’s those that start with why, that have the ability to inspire those around them or find others who inspire them” ~ Simon Sinek
Have you read this book? It’s powerful for individuals, teams and companies. To make movement towards our goals, we must understand and support the WHY behind our decisions, plans.
As the book states, when the why is clear, the how becomes easy.
So, what’s your why?
To your growth, development and amazing potential,
Lisa
